Walking Into a Brow Appointment Without a Plan? Read This First.
Walking into a brow appointment without a game plan is a bit like getting a haircut and saying, "Do whatever you think looks good."
Sometimes it works out—but sometimes you leave wishing you had been more specific.
At The Wink Lab, we've found that the happiest clients are the ones who communicate their goals before we ever pick up the wax. Even if you're not sure exactly what you want, knowing a few key phrases can make a huge difference in your final results.
The Most Important Thing to Say First
Before your appointment begins, tell your brow artist your long-term goal.
For example:
"I'd like to keep my brows as full as possible."
or
"I'm trying to grow them out."
or
"I want a cleaner, more defined shape."
That one sentence gives your artist a roadmap for making decisions throughout your service.
If You Love Your Brows, Ask for a "Clean Up Only"
One of the most common requests at The Wink Lab is:
"I just want a clean-up—please keep my natural shape and thickness."
This tells your esthetician to:
Remove stray hairs
Clean underneath the brow
Tidy above the brow
Preserve your natural fullness
Avoid over-shaping
For many people, less is truly more.
If You're Growing Your Brows Out, Say So
If you've spent months trying to regrow over-plucked brows, don't keep that information to yourself.
Tell your brow artist:
"I'm growing my brows out. Please only remove hairs that are clearly outside the shape and leave everything else alone."
This simple conversation can save months of regrowth.
At The Wink Lab, we love helping clients rebuild their brows—not over-thin them.
Want a Completely New Shape? Ask for Brow Mapping
If you're looking for a transformation, ask:
"Can we map my brows before waxing?"
Professional brow mapping takes into account:
Face shape
Eye placement
Bone structure
Natural brow growth
Facial symmetry
We also encourage clients to bring inspiration photos, but remember: your brows should complement your face—not copy someone else's.
Tell Your Brow Artist Exactly What Style You Like
Words like "natural" or "clean" mean different things to different people.
Instead, describe exactly what you're looking for.
Thickness
Full and fluffy
Medium definition
Soft and natural
Sharply sculpted
Arch
Soft rounded arch
High lifted arch
Straight brow
Minimal arch
Front of the Brows
Some clients love a soft, fluffy front.
Others prefer a crisp, defined beginning.
Tell your artist your preference before they start.
Ask for a Pencil Mapping Before Any Wax Is Applied
One of our favorite recommendations:
"Can you map my brows with a pencil first so I can see the shape before waxing?"
At The Wink Lab, we believe communication is everything.
Seeing the outline first allows you to say things like:
"Can we keep them a little thicker?"
"I'd like a softer arch."
"Let's keep more length on the tail."
It's much easier to remove another hair than to wait months for one to grow back.
Don't Forget About Trimming
Sometimes the biggest improvement comes from a tiny trim—not more waxing.
If you love the trendy fluffy look, tell your artist:
"Please don't trim the front too short—I like to brush them upward."
Over-trimming can dramatically change the appearance of your brows.
Tell Your Technician About Your Skincare
This is one of the most important safety conversations you can have.
Always mention if you're using:
Retinol
Retin-A
Tretinoin
Accutane
Glycolic Acid
Salicylic Acid
Chemical exfoliants
Prescription acne medications
These products can make your skin extremely sensitive and increase the risk of skin lifting during waxing.
In some situations, tweezing or threading may be a safer option.
If You Have Sensitive Skin, Speak Up
If you've ever experienced:
eczema
psoriasis
allergies
redness
skin lifting
reactions to waxing
tell your esthetician before your appointment.
Your treatment may need to be modified to protect your skin.
Ask About the Finishing Touches
A professional brow appointment doesn't end with the last wax strip.
Ask your artist about:
Cooling aloe gel
Soothing products
Redness reduction
Brow styling
Filling techniques
Product recommendations for home
If you have plans afterward, many professionals can also apply a light concealer or mineral makeup to minimize redness.
Our Biggest Professional Tip
If we could give every client just one piece of advice, it would be this:
Don't chase trends—choose brows that fit your face.
The ultra-thin brows of the '90s came and went.
Today's laminated brows may eventually change too.
A timeless, balanced brow that complements your natural features will almost always age better than following every trend.
At The Wink Lab, our philosophy has always been enhancement—not overcorrection.
Looking for Something More Than Brow Waxing?
If you're constantly filling in sparse brows every morning, you may be a great candidate for a longer-lasting solution.
Many of our clients choose:
Brow Lamination for a fuller, fluffier look that lasts 6–8 weeks.
Microblading for natural hair-like strokes.
Powder Brows for a soft, makeup-inspired finish with beautiful long-term results.
If you're not sure which option is right for you, we're always happy to walk you through the differences.
